2013-14: BUCCS TAKE 2ND AT TROY WITHOUT TWO STARTERS

Covington put in an outstanding performance at the Troy Invitational on Saturday, finishing in 2nd place out of 18 teams despite having two starters out of the lineup. Loveland won the tournament, while Coldwater finished in third. The Buccs had three champions among their ten top-six place-winners.

Connor Ryan (106) won Covington’s first championship with a 3-2 victory over Jaylin Cameron of Urbana. Ryan won his semifinal bout with a 10-2 major decision over Andrew Meyer of Coldwater after going 3-0 with a pin in his pool.

Ryan Ford (132) won his second consecutive Troy title with a dominating performance. Ford earned pins in the finals and semifinals over Chase Wilcoxon of Bellefontaine and Eric Cannaday of Troy, respectively. In his pool matches, Ryan went 3-0 with 3 pins to give him a total of 5 pins on the day.

A.J. Ouellette (195) earned the Buccaneers’ third title with a 6-3 decision over Danny Kruzel of Loveland. Ouellette advanced to the finals with a pin over Brad Byers of Arcanum, after going 3-0 with 2 pins in his pool.

Lance Miller (138) also advanced to the finals, finishing as runner-up to Loveland’s state-placer Ben Heyob. Miller won an exciting 3-1 overtime match against state qualifier Chase Mayabb of Milton-Union after winning his pool with a 3-0 record and 2 pins.

Taking third place for the Buccs with 4-1 records were Josh Sowers (120) and Ben Miller (182). Sowers picked up two pins on the day, while Miller earned three. Branden Robinson (126, pin) and Alex Fries (160) both won their 4-man pools, before finishing in 4th place.

Brandon Magee (170) finished in fifth place with a 4-1 record with 4 pins. He went 2-1 in his pool, then won his final two bouts. Justin Daniel (220) finished in 6th place with two pins, while Ian Fries – who also competed at 220 lbs – took eighth overall.

Key team points were picked up by other members of the team. Also competing for the Buccs were Coleman Ryan (113), Michael Cox (132), Deron White (145), Logan Fields (152), Carl Lankford (285) and Luke Grieshop (285).

Covington competes next at Tippecanoe on Thursday in a meet with Troy and Miami East. The start time is 6 pm.

Sophomore Ryan Ford won a championship at 132 pounds.
